Professor Cyril Julie
Project Leader
Professor Cyril Julie is the First Rand Foundation Chair in Mathematics Education at the University of the Western Cape. He is currently directing the Local Evidence-Driven Improvement of Mathematics Teaching And Learning Initiative (LEDIMTALI) at the University of the Western Cape.
Dr. Marius Simons
Lecturer: Mathematics Education
Dr Marius Simon is currently a lecturer in Foundation Phase Mathematics and in the Method of Mathematics in the Senior Phase in the School of Science and Mathematics Education at the University of the Western Cape. His research interest is in the analysis of learners' ways of working with school mathematics using ethnomethodology and the sociology of science.
Dr. Bruce May
Senior Lecturer: Mathematics Education
Dr Bruce May is currently a lecturer in the School of Science and Mathematics Education at the University of the Western Cape. His research interest is in Practice in mathematics (Influence of practice on retention and proficiency); Mathematical reasoning (cognitive architecture and processes involved in mathematical reasoning); Mathematical knowledge types (Procedural and Conceptual knowledge; The development of procedural skill and conceptual understanding and the iterative interactions between them) and Proof and proving in mathematics.
Professor Mohammad Faaiz Gierdien
Senior Mathematics Educator
Professor Faaiz Gierdien works in the Department of Curriculum Studies as a senior mathematics educator. His research interests are in mathematics education and teacher education, with a particular focus on aspects of continuing professional development and the use of information and communications technology in relation to school mathematics reform. His master's and doctoral students work more broadly within the field of mathematics education and its intersections with teacher education. He is currently a co-investigator in the Local Evidence-Driven Improvement of Mathematics Teaching and Learning Initiative (LEDIMTALI) based at the University of the Western Cape.
Dr. Benita Nel
Senior Lecturer: Mathematics Education
Dr BP Nel is a senior lecturer at the University of the Western Cape. She is residing in the School of Science and Mathematics Education in the Faculty of Education. Her research interest is in Mathematics teacher professional development both with undergraduate Mathematics student teachers as well as with in-service Mathematics teachers.
