Ledimtali Workshop (Front View)

What is LEDIMTALI?

LEDIMTALI is a project where mathematics educators, mathematicians, mathematics teachers and mathematics curriculum advisors work collectively and collaboratively to develop good teaching of mathematics. The initiative is premised on the belief that such collective and collaborative work can lead to learners achieving at their highest potential in mathematics.

Why LEDIMTALI?

There is a need in the country for more young people to enter mathematically-based careers such as actuaries, accountants, engineers, architects, forensics, medical professionals, etc. However, the majority of young people are not reaching their highest potential of achievement in school mathematics. This requires a concerted and dedicated effort by all major stakeholders - mathematics educators, mathematicians, mathematics teachers and mathematics curriculum advisors - to work towards an increase in the number of learners offering Mathematics at the Further Education and Training (FET) level and raise the level of achievement in Mathematics. LEDIMTALI thus has as primary aim the enhancement of teaching of Mathematics at the FET level to contribute towards the realisation of these goals.

How will LEDIMTALI work to achieve it's goals?

LEDIMTALI will endeavour to foster and establish a community of goal-driven school mathematics practitioners by:

  • Providing opportunities for reflections on classroom-based teaching of mathematics.

  • Designing and developing strategies to enhance ways of teaching mathematics based on results forthcoming from these considered reflections.

  • Supporting teaching of mathematics through coaching, training and co-teaching.

  • Inculcating in learners an attitude of effective, efficient, conscientious and committed ways of studying mathematics for mastery.

  • Providing resources to enhance both the teaching and learning of mathematics.

  • Developing opportunities for the enhanced understanding of the appropriate mathematical knowledge that underlies the teaching of school mathematics.

  • Developing respectful ways of working amongst and between mathematics educators, mathematicians, mathematics teachers and mathematics curriculum advisors for the enhancement of teaching of mathematics.
